The trail association recommends carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it. It also says bear spray is not allowed on local flights. Arrange to obtain it after landing. Sunshine Coast Trail FAQ
Buy an animal deterrent
In Canada, the label must identify the spray as intended for animals. Parks Canada says the container must not exceed 500 mL. Personal pepper spray is a different product. Choose a can labeled for bears and read its directions. Parks Canada
US EPA specifications are not Canadian registration rules. Check the Canadian label instead of buying by a US percentage recommendation. The range printed on a can depends on that product. Wind affects the spray. Parks Canada
Carry it within reach
Parks Canada recommends a holster you can reach with your dominant hand. Hip or chest placement keeps it accessible. Check that your pack does not cover it. Learn the safety clip before you leave. Parks Canada
Rehearse with an inert practice can following its instructions. Do not discharge a live can onto your gear to test it. Check the expiration date and storage directions. NPS practice guidance
Follow the directions on your can
Use bear spray for an aggressive approaching bear according to the product instructions and the agency’s guidance. Remove the safety clip with the nozzle pointing away from you. Create a cloud between you and the bear. Wind or rain can reduce effectiveness. Keep yourself out of the cloud and leave the area after use. Parks Canada
A range on the can is not a promise that the spray will reach the same distance into a headwind. Check the label’s actual range and instructions. Do not choose a deployment distance from an unrelated model’s label. UDAP
Do not spray your tent or clothing
The residue can attract bears. It is not a preventive treatment for your skin or gear. Keep food storage separate from spray use. Parks Canada
Read the packing page and the trail association’s current food-storage advice. Spray does not store food or remove food smells from a campsite. Sunshine Coast Trail FAQ
Check the date on your own can
UDAP lists a three-year expiration period for its bear spray. That is a manufacturer example, not a shelf life for every can sold in Canada. Follow the date and replacement instructions on your product. UDAP
Counter Assault, UDAP and Frontiersman sell bear deterrents in the US. A brand name alone does not establish that a particular can is approved for sale in Canada. Read the Canadian product label. No brand or model is endorsed here.
