Getting to the Sunshine Coast Trail

Travel to Powell River by ferry or air. Reach Sarah Point by water taxi or walk in from arranged rough-road access.

The trail runs through the qathet region near Powell River, British Columbia. Driving from Vancouver requires two ferry crossings. Check current schedules with each operator. qPAWS publishes its own getting-here page and the official trail maps.

From Vancouver, by road

The road trip from Vancouver uses two ferry crossings. Travel time depends on the connections.

  • Horseshoe Bay → Langdale: about 40 minutes on the published schedule. Vehicle reservations are available; check your travel date.
  • Drive Highway 101 from Langdale to Earls Cove, about 80 minutes.
  • Earls Cove → Saltery Bay: about 50 minutes on the published schedule. As of August 2026, BC Ferries does not accept reservations on this route; vehicles board first-come, first-served.
  • Saltery Bay to Powell River is about 30 minutes by road. The southern trailhead is beside the Saltery Bay ferry terminal.

Check BC Ferries schedules and current conditions before leaving. Reserve the Horseshoe Bay–Langdale vehicle crossing if needed.

From Vancouver Island

BC Ferries runs between Little River in Comox and Westview in Powell River. The scheduled crossing is about 85 minutes. Check the current sailing before arranging onward transport.

Flying in

Pacific Coastal Airlines lists flights between Vancouver’s South Terminal and Powell River. Check the current timetable before arranging onward transport.

Bear spray and fuel canisters cannot travel on a commercial flight, including in checked baggage. Buy them after landing and confirm store stock first.

Reaching the northern trailhead

The trail starts at Sarah Point. Lund Water Taxi offers Sarah Point drop-offs by arrangement from Lund Harbour: 604-483-9749. Book ahead and confirm the landing point, tide limits, luggage and pet rules.

Malaspina Road provides rough-road access partway toward Sarah Point. Confirm road condition, vehicle requirements and remaining walking distance with a local transport operator.

Getting around Powell River

BC Transit serves Powell River and nearby communities. As of August 2026, a single fare is $2.25 and a DayPASS is $4.50. Small pets must travel in a secure handheld carrier. Route 12 serves Lang Bay; selected trips continue to Saltery Bay, and some do not operate on Thursdays. Check the timetable for your travel date.

Direction and pickup

Southbound hikers finish beside the Saltery Bay ferry terminal. Northbound hikers must arrange pickup at Sarah Point or another northern access.
